The Encounter · Olympic National Park

A wild salmon clears the falls — out of the water for a single frame.

There’s a stretch of river in Olympic National Park where the water folds over a ledge, and the salmon have to clear it to keep moving upstream. Most of them miss — hit the rock, fall back, go again. This one didn’t: it came out of the foam completely clear of the water, head already turning back toward the current, the whole fish held against the wet black rock for about a fifteenth of a second.

The print carries that single frame and nothing else — a one-color linocut, bone-cream ink carved out of a charcoal ground, the whitewater left as bare negative space and hand-cut marks.

There's a stretch of river in Olympic National Park where the water folds over a ledge, and the salmon have to clear it to keep moving upstream. I'd been on the rocks long enough to lose the feeling in my feet. Most of them missed — hit the rock, fell back, went again. This one didn't. It came out of the foam completely clear of the water, head already turning back toward the current, and for about a fifteenth of a second the whole fish hung there against the wet black rock. That's the frame.

Every Shutter & Wing design starts as a photograph from the field. This one became a single-color linocut — bone-cream ink carved out of a charcoal ground, the whitewater left as bare negative space and hand-cut marks. One color, carved lines, nothing the original frame didn't already have.

Printed on a 6.1 oz garment-dyed pocket tee. Ring-spun cotton, side-seamed, soft-washed — the kind of blank that gets better with wear rather than falling apart. Available in denim, pepper, and moss, each reading differently against the carved lines.

  • 6.1 oz/yd² ring-spun 100% cotton
  • Garment-dyed, preshrunk, soft-washed
  • Topstitched rib collar
  • Left chest pocket
  • Twill-taped shoulder-to-shoulder
  • Double-needle stitched sleeves and hem

Fit & care. Relaxed, true-to-size drape — size down for a trimmer fit. Garment-dyed cotton softens and fades with character over time. Wash cold inside-out; hang dry or tumble low.

Made to order. Printed and shipped from the USA, produced only once you order it. Allow about a week before it ships — tracking follows as soon as it's on its way.

Studio Notes

Each piece starts as a photograph from the field — a specific encounter, a specific animal. The image gets stripped back into artwork built to hold at apparel scale. Readable at a distance. Worth a closer look.

Production

Printed and assembled to order through a dedicated production partner using quality blanks. The catalog stays small by design — fewer pieces, better work.
