Inside the canyon at the end of the day, the floor already dark and the top of the walls still holding light.
We hiked in at the end of the day and got down inside the canyon right as the sun was going. The floor had been in shadow for a while by then, but the top of the walls was still holding light, and that gap between the lit rim and the dark floor is the whole photograph.
We took the switchbacks slower than I would have on my own, which turned out to be the right call. You notice more at that pace. The walls run about fifteen hundred feet and at the narrow points the river is tight enough that you can nearly reach both of them, which is a strange thing to be able to say about a canyon that size.
This was three days after the eclipse, when half of Texas was still driving home.
